‘Look, I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today. But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from Him and worship gods you have not known before.’ Deut.11:26-28.
ECONOMISTS tell us that in life we are faced with choices. An individual has the right to choose out of so many pressing issues. Whatever he chooses becomes his lot in life. Yet, there is no neutrality in choice and so every child of God is expected to make a choice whether good or bad. What choices are you planning to make today?
However, it is amazing that God set before the Israelites a choice between a blessing and a curse. It is even more amazing that most of them through their disobedience chose the curse. We have the same fundamental choice today. We can live for ourselves or live in service to God.
To choose our own way is to travel dead end-road, but to choose God’s way is to receive eternal life, ‘Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged, but has crossed over from death to life,’ Jh. 5:24. The choice is ours and must be made under God.
Unfortunately today, many people have gone on their own way, doing their thing and living anyhow. It is not surprising that they do not make reference to God in most of their choices. The prophet Isaiah confirmed when he noted thus: ‘We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.’ Isaiah 53:6.
Those, who distant themselves from God are simply attracting hardship, sicknesses, sudden death and unbridled failures on their way. The children of Israel abandoned God and went on their own way and at the end they were cursed. Oftentimes, their enemies invaded them and made away with valuable thing. And some other times, they were taken as captives and made to serve those who took them into captivity. No one who boycotts the Lord or repudiates His commandments would ever find it easy in life.
That is why today, the call of God is afresh unto us to choose, obeying and serving Him so that His blessing will be poured upon us. At this level, there will be no more struggling before we put food on our tables, wherever the soul of our feet will touch God will make it our possession. In fact, it will be like the land of Canaan that God made to be flowing with milk and honey so shall our possession be.
Child of God, what are we waiting for today? To choose life, live and live rightly with God too. Or to look the other way and follow other gods and suffer the shame, the humiliation and the curses that are attendant at turning our backs unto the Lord. Whatever we chose is what we get and no one should be blamed thereafter.
