BY GABRIEL KPAGBAN

It was a weekend of beehive activities again as the Council of Knights of Oji-River Diocese held its retreat at the Ibru International Centre in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The retreat started on Friday, October 15th, 2010 and ended on Sunday, October 17th, 2010. The retreat which was led by the Chairman of the Council of Knights of the Diocese Sir Dr. Samuel O. Ogu, and the Chaplain of the Knights Rev. Canon Ralph Ifesinachi has its theme as “A test of our stewardship”. The sole purpose of the retreat was to improve the spiritual lives of the Knights and to make them alive to their responsibilities in the Church of God.

The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger, who also doubled as the Bishop of the Diocese of Oji River, The Most Revd. Dr. Amos A. Madu took time off his crowded schedule to meet with the Knights at the Centre. He spoke on the topic “Retreat as an essential ingredient for a Christian growth”. Addressing the Knights, he challenged them to see the need to live up to their calling. He challenged them to be closer to God and be hungry to do good in the Church of God especially in Oji-River Diocese where they currently serve as Knights. He urged them to emulates the Patron of the Ibru Centre, Dr. Alex Ibru who single-handedly built the Centre and thereafter released it for the work of God through the Anglican Church at God’s prompting. He counsels them to guide against too much familiarity, which may breed contempt; respect should be mutual. He encouraged the participants to explore the beauty of the Centre, and prayed for them so that they could discover the mind of God in the retreat.

The President of the Council of Knights of the Diocese, Sir. Dr. E.O. Ogu along with other members of the organizing committee appreciated the efforts and contributions of individuals which made the conference a reality. In his lecture titled “things that degrades a Knight or Lady”, the Chaplain of the Oji-Diocese Council of Knights Revd. Canon R. Ifesinachi identified unfaithfulness, inherited culture, immorality, bad habits among others as some of the things that degrade a knight or Lady. He called on the Knights to shun these vices.

Other guest resource teachers at the event were Ven. Adichie and Sir. Chuka Udeolisa. Ven. Adichie identified humility, accountability, faithfulness and goodwill as some virtues of a good Knight or Lady. The conference devoted enough time out to pray for the nation, the Church and their personal needs. There were also sessions of praise, worship and choruses.

The retreat came to an end on Sunday, 17th October, 2010 with a thanksgiving service at the St. Peter’s Chapel of the Centre. In his sermon Ven. Alex Uwaechina dwelt on the need to be born again and receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. In an unexpected move, the Oji-River Diocese Council of Knights made a donation of N50, 000.00 to the Centre to help fine-tune work at the Church of Nigeria building in preparation for the Bishop’s retreat in January. Mr. Lazarus Ojada, the Finance/Administrative Manager of the Centre received the amount on behalf of the Centre. In all these Knights and Ladies enjoyed their stay at the Centre as they had time to seek the face of God in the serene environment.
