‘And when Zachariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zachariah: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name, John,’ Luke 1v12-13.

Zachariah as a priest was in good standing with the Lord. The Bible said together with his wife Elizabeth both were righteous, working blamelessly in all the commandment and statutes of the Lord, Lk 1v6. But Zachariah had no child. You can imagine the cross he was carrying while ministering unto the Lord. Yet, he was not deterred in serving the Lord.

As a Priest, he had been pleading for the nation of Israel for God’s visitation. Any genuine man of God, wherever he is carrying out his ministry, it is incumbent on him to pray for the well being of that place. It is possible that Zachariah must have also requested from the Lord the gift of a child. This request was timely as he and the wife at that time were advanced in age and may retire any moment.

In answer to the request he made unto God, angel Gabriel was sent to him to announce that God had answered his prayer. Fear gripped him. But God had spoken to remove his reproach and to put smiles on his face and to cheer him up for the work he is doing for Him. I want to be bold to announce to somebody today that God had decided to remove your reproach and to give you smiles instead of ashes or sadness.

The result of Zachariah’s prayer was the birth of John the Baptist. The Bible is full of examples of how God had been in the business of answering prayers; He is never late and will never be, Amen! These two Bible passages are highly illustrative: ‘and Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived…and God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb,’ Gen. 25v21, 30v22.

People of God, permit me to announce to you that your prayers you have been making since January this year about yourself, family, marriage, business, education, job and the nation Nigeria has been answered. The reason being that God has remembered you and He is determined to bring to pass that which you had requested of Him. Yes, do not doubt Him for He is able and mighty and capable of making everything work out for your own good.

Therefore, as the year draws to a close, every child of God should be positive because our God is a prayer answering God. We should not allow ourselves to be intimidated by the devil or his agents as to the extent of doubting God’s capability in answering prayers. Go therefore into the New Year with great hope and expectation that God whom you trust will not let you down nor will He abandon you. The Bible was right: ‘Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever,’ Heb. 13v8.

Happy New Year in advance!
