SUNDAY OCTOBER 20, 2013
‘And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.’ Gen. 19:17.
REMEMBER, what Lot saw in the plain land of Sodom and Gomorrah that put him into trouble. No wonder he becam e compromised in his faith. The scripture maintains that: ‘evil association corrupts good manners’ (1 Cor. 15:33). Someone may argue that Lot expressed some form of godliness – at least he welcomed the angels and brought them to his house. Yet, he compromised with the people of the land. We should not be too comfortable with sin.
Notice, the angels of God were on a mission to punish the land of Sodom. Their wickedness reached the highest heaven. God was determined to deal with sin. You know that ‘the wages of sin is death’ (Rom 6:23). When sin overflows it cannot escape punishment from God.
Sodom, to show its level of depravity, demanded to sleep with the angels that entered their town. Even the plea of Lot that they take his two daughters fell on deaf ears. Was Lot right in suggesting that his two virgin daughters be given to them? Was it not enough sign that he had compromised with the people of the land? But God had mercy on him and his entire family. Yes, God says, ‘I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy’ (Rom. 9:15; Acts 17:11).
Ancient and Modern: No 181 stanza 4:
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
In 1992, at the synod of the then Diocese of Owerri held at All Saints Cathedral Egbu near Owerri, the synod preacher, a Presbyterian Pastor said ‘if God will not punish Nigeria considering the volume of sins in the country then, on the last day, God will have to apologise to Sodom and Gomorrah. Are the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah not here with us in Nigeria? Is it not also present in the worldwide Anglican Church and some other church denominations that may not be bold enough to bring such depravity into the front burner?
Let it be noted that God is not happy and His wrath must surely come upon the sinner. God threatened Jerusalem in Ezek. 23:28-35, that He will punish it. Jerusalem abandoned God and followed other idols. Therefore, God’s hammer fell on them on three ways: (a) their enemies overpowered them (b) their enemies took over their possessions and (c) God exposed them and brought them to shame. There is danger and every child of God should read the handwriting on the wall. Sooner than later, good will be rewarded and evil punished.
Therefore, child of God today is a day of the word of God says when you hear the Word, do not harden your hearts. Open your hearts and receive Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour. This is the only way of escape. Do not delay. Please as much as possible do not put yourself in a precarious situation. Escape from the city of Sodom (sin) for your dear life.
Prayers for the day:
• Pray against the sin of compromise.
• Ask God to give you the courage and boldness to live for Him.
• Desire God’s blessings in your life, business or career.VEN. ERNEST ONUOHA Rector, Ibru International Ecumenical Centre, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State. www.ibrucentre.org
