On Tuesday 20th September, 2011 at the 10th General Synod of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion at Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Ikeja, Lagos, the house of clergy put to vote democratically for the election of a new Prolocutor. The election was occasioned by the sudden but painful exit of the former Prolocutor, Ven. Barr. Alex Aduchie.

Two top contenders to the post were: Ven. R. V. A. Adeyemi (Diocese of Ijebu South) and Ven. Prof. Israel Okoye (Awka Diocese). After an emotion laden observance of a minute silence in honour of the departed colleague, the house swung in into a free and fair election.

It is interesting to note that Ven. Okoye secured a total of 138 votes to emerge the winner, while Ven. Adeyemi had 17 votes. With this election, Ven. Okoye becomes the new Prolocutor for the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

Ratifying later this election at the floor of the 10th General Synod, the Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh observed that Ven. Okoye has all it takes to contribute to the well being of the church. He noted passionately that he has the character, capacity and courage to lead the clergy. The Primate therefore enjoined the new Prolocutor to help restore all that the locusts have eaten these years in the church and the society at large.

Ven. Israel Okoye, a distinguished professor of political science, is the Archdeacon of Ugwu Oba Missionary Archdeaconry in Awka Diocese. He is happily married to Mrs. Faith Okoye and the marriage is blessed with five lovely and God fearing children.

Ven. Okoye is an Alumnus of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He is to all intent and purposes a tactical preacher and evangelist to the core. Earlier, he attended a graduate programme at Trinity Theological College, Umuahia for his theological formation.

There is no doubt the new Prolocutor will bring to bear in his tenure dedication, selfless services and good leadership as the new Chairman of the House of Clergy, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

Indeed, the task of a Prolocutor is an enormous one. But thank God Ven. Prof. Okoye should be encouraged for: ‘in a job you never did, God will give you the strength you never had’.

We at Ibru Centre sincerely rejoice with Ven. Israel one of our reliable resource persons at this time of joyous occasion. The scripture was right: ‘rejoice with those who rejoice’ Rm. 12v15. It is our desire and earnest prayer that your tenure may never grow dim. Welcome on board, the new Prolocutor of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.
